Best places to live in Cornwall for history buffs

You’ve visited the best of Cornwall’s castles and cathedrals, moors and mines, but what if you could make this historic county your home?

Steeped in history, with occupation starting around 10,000 years ago, Cornwall is crammed with character, culture and charm. Not only are some of its main attractions of great significance when it comes to the region’s heritage, but the outdoor spaces tell their own tales too.

So, where are the best places to settle down for those with a keen interest in the county’s past?

St Neots

St Neots is an area that is rich in history with sites such as the Holy Well and the ancient Bodmin Moor located nearby. What’s more, the parish’s medieval church with its stained glass windows is a sight to behold. Situated in between Launceston and Bodmin, you have the choice of two additional historic monuments explore at the striking Launceston Castle which dates back to 1066 and the 12th-century fortress, Restormel Castle, which can be found near Lostwithiel.

Truro

Formulated from an Iron age settlement, the castle and port at Truro became recognised as a town and thrived on foreign commerce. In 1876, the Diocese of Truro was created, then came a neo-gothic Victorian cathedral in the early 1900s with three impressive spires: Victoria, Alexandra and Edward. Just a short distance from the more popular tourist sites of Cornwall, Truro offers some wonderful-looking streets, rolling hills and fascinating creeks.

Saltash

Known as the ‘gateway to Cornwall’, Saltash is yet another hidden gem of the south-western coast. The nearby working mill, Cotehele Mill, is a fantastic reminder of the past when corn was milled for the Victorian community, with the site also offering a glimpse into workshops of traditional furniture-makers and potters. Not far away, you can explore the Tudor house which has been preserved as a time-capsule by long-time residents, the Edgcumbe family.

Boscastle

This romantic spot is definitely one you could get used to. In addition to being stunning from every angle, Boscastle boasts an incredible medieval history. Over a century ago, it was already a busy, hard-working harbour but it was the Botterell family who first put it on the Cornish map back in the 12th century. Now a fishing port with a few gift shops, you can take visitors to a pottery in the village or go to the Witchcraft Museum.

Falmouth

Although it is today a large fishing port and a holiday resort, Falmouth is yet another example of why people love the Cornwall coast so much. Henry VIII had a fort built here at Pendennis Point which Charles I’s Queen, Henrietta Maria, used to flee into exile during the English Civil War of 1642-45. Both this monument and another built by Henry VII on the opposite shore at St Mawes can still be seen standing today. Moreover, in 1688, the town became a Post Office packet station, at the heart of mail traffic destined for the rest of the world.
