Best places to live in Cornwall for families

With spectacular coastline and quaint fishing harbours, Cornwall has been a popular holiday destination for decades. For some, the remote beaches and wild moorland evoke images of a slower pace of life away from hectic urban living. Maybe you crave fresh sea air and long coastal walks. Or perhaps you want your children to live outdoors surfing, swimming, and rock pooling. Whatever your reasons for moving to this idyllic part of the country, here are some of the best places in Cornwall to settle with your family.

1. Falmouth

Famous for its harbour, Falmouth blends its sea heritage perfectly with newer creative and digital industries. A university town, it has invested heavily in a thriving harbourside development with shops and restaurants, but also has a large mix of quirky independent businesses that provide the town with a unique feel. Practically, there are excellent state and private schools, a hospital and it has a main line railway station.

2. Truro

This is the only city in Cornwall and the magnificent neo-Gothic Victorian cathedral sits proudly in the centre. But it is the mix of cobbled streets, stone terraces and palm trees that make this city a place where people want to live. Many of the schools are rated ‘outstanding’ and there are also two independent schools. There are great transport links and the beach is only a short drive away, meaning that you can blend an urban and beach lifestyle easily. Truro is also famous for its festivals, with the most famous being Truro City of Lights. This spectacularly visual procession brings together artists, schools and community groups and coincides with the switching on of the Christmas lights. Community is important for the residents of Truro.

3. Newquay

Known as the UK’s surfing capital, Newquay is a lively seaside town filled with camper vans, beach huts, and lifeguards. But there is more than meets the eye to this popular holiday destination and many families choose Newquay as their home. Besides surfing, the activities on offer will appeal to everyone. Outdoor hobbies include golfing, kayaking and jet-skiing. There are great coastal walks for the weekends and an aquarium. It is also building a reputation as a gourmet food hub. More and more independent restaurants are opening, making it a fantastic place to socialise with friends. The popular high schools are outstanding and, as well as the railway, there is also an airport.

4. Penzance

Penzance is the final stop on the train coming from London Paddington and can feel as though it’s on the edge of the Earth. But, its distance from the Capital makes no difference to the charisma and energy this charming market town exudes. Unlike some of the more popular residential towns, Penzance’s homes are reasonably priced and you will definitely get more for your money. It has a quirky high street boasting an array of independent retailers including antique dealers, art galleries, and eco-friendly products. The schooling is excellent with several secondary schools rated ‘outstanding’ and there are excellent transport links. It is certainly worth considering when looking to move to Cornwall.
