Bristol is well known as an attractive and vibrant location to live and work. The universities and thriving business sector contribute to the vitality of the city and many areas have a bohemian, arty vibe which is viewed with envy by those elsewhere in the UK. It is generally a green, pleasant and open-minded place to live which makes it popular with the many families who choose to make it their home. Over recent years, the number of people choosing to relocate to Bristol has increased.
Families will generally be looking for housing that is good quality, high value for money, close to local amenities such as green space and schools and with good transport links for work. Many areas of the city will fit this brief, but our favourite five locations for families are listed below.
St George
This area has become popular with young families and, as a result, house prices continue to rise. Green spaces are always on the family buyer wishlist even for those lucky enough to secure a property with a good sized garden. Buyers in this area benefit from the nearby St George’s park which has tennis courts and a skate park for older children as well as the usual play area. A variety of shops, cafes and restaurants can be found easily in the locale.

Hengrove
Technically Hengrove is not actually part of Bristol, being situated in neighbouring Somerset. However, it functions as a suburb of the city which why we’ve included it in our list. This area is ideal for families who want to commute for work, being well connected to the road network and providing convenient bus routes to the city. There is a good range of schools and many terraced houses for families to choose from here.
Redland
Last but not least, Redland appeals to those who might like to live in Clifton but lack the funds to buy property in that very popular area. As with Clifton, this area is also rather upmarket and it appeals to young professionals as well as families. The Redland area offers easy access for the families living there to the green space at Clifton Down and the shops of Clifton Village. This area includes some of the best rated state schools in the city, adding to its family friendly appeal.
