Looking at the façade from the street you could be forgiven for thinking you are about to enter a Georgian townhouse however, once across the threshold, you will be amazed at what you see. Steeped in history with its origins in the 1400s and extended in the 16th century this is probably one of the most quirky, charming and characterful Grade II Listed medieval oak framed properties you are likely to see. Located in Sandwich's Conservation Area it was once the home of merchants in the Middle Ages whose goods arrived by ship at the nearby jetty in the days when the Cinque Port of Sandwich was a major seaport, the River Stour was a thriving waterway and both warships and merchant ships moored at the quayside. The front porch leads straight into the fascinating study area with stairs to the first floor, which could also work as a formal dining area. Everywhere you look there are a plethora of ceiling and wall beams and a magnificent, exposed brick chimney creating impressive fireplaces both on the ground and first floors.

With its beamed ceiling and walls as well as an inglenook fireplace and brick chimney breast, the country style kitchen/dining area is large enough to seat at least eight people round a table. There are plenty of attractive white wood panelled units and a charming door to the rear porch that leads to a sheltered and private courtyard. Here you can sit and enjoy the sunshine while watching the fish swimming in the two raised ponds. The lovely lounge is on the first floor and includes a partially vaulted ceiling with a gorgeous vintage Lily French multifuel burner in the brick fireplace. There are a variety of ‘nooks and crannies' as well as a spacious sitting area that is large enough for a computer desk. This leads to the charming family bathroom with a corner bath and includes a laundry cupboard housing a washing machine and tumble dryer. On the second floor there is a galleried corridor overlooking the lounge, a double bedroom with a vaulted and beamed ceiling, a very old horizontal beam and fitted cupboards while the main bedroom also has a vaulted and beamed ceiling and beamed walls.

What the Owner says:

I have lived here for the past 40 years and it has been a wonderful family home that expands like a veritable Tardis once you open the front door. I love Sandwich with its quaint narrow streets. It seems to have the atmosphere of a large and friendly village and provides a real sense of community. One of the great delights is that I can walk everywhere locally whether I want to go out in the evening or pop to the town centre for some groceries. As well as its history the town is awash with delightful individual shops providing anything from designer clothes to unusual cheeses and art galleries to antique shops. There are also some delicious restaurants and historic pubs as well as a nearby farm shop. Indeed I used to commute daily to London from Sandwich station and always loved the thought of coming back to my lovely home in such a beautiful town at the end of the day. On a sunny day, there is nothing better than sitting by the river and enjoying the fresh air. For boating enthusiasts, there is an excellent boatyard and mooring along the river Stour and, for golfing fanatics, we have the Prince's golf club and the championship Royal St. George's golf course nearby. Nature lovers can enjoy the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay nature reserve where you can take the dog for a good walk and watch the resident and migratory birds.
