Historical Note
Whitehall Manor is believed to date from circa 1450. It has had a colourful past in that the then Lord of the Manor, Nicholas Bowerman, was apparently assassinated on May 8th 1559. Given the upheaval that was likely when Catholic Mary was succeeded by Protestant Elizabeth, it would seem to be a reasonable inference that Nicholas was too closely identified with the outgoing regime and got on the wrong side of the turbulent politics of the day. Unusually, despite its great antiquity, Whitehall Manor has only been owned, for any significant period of time, by a handful of families, namely the Bowermans, the Lutleys, the Courtenays and the present vendors, the Nicholls since it was first built.
Situation
Whitehall Manor is situated in a country location in the Culm Valley which is part of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Standing in a sheltered and sunny position, the property enjoys a southerly and westerly aspect with an attractive rural outlook. The property is situated in the tiny hamlet of Whitehall, about 1 mile from the village of Hemyock which has a very active community with many social societies.
