A charming and beautifully presented cottage in a tucked away position in one of East Devon's most picturesque villages.
The Property. Gorse Cottage is a particularly attractive Grade II Listed detached cottage which has origins dating back to the late 16th/early 17th century. It has been the subject of a superb programme of renovation and improvement by the current owners within the last ten or so years and is now presented in beautiful order with a delightful blend of both traditional and more modern styles. It retains a wealth of character features which include the wide floorboards and inglenook fireplace with wood burner to the sitting room, as well as many exposed timbers and cruck beams to the first floor. Gorse Cottage has been enlarged over the years, with one of the more recent additions being the garden room, which is glazed to two sides and has a lovely outlook over the gardens.
Situation. Gorse Cottage is located in a tucked away position in the heart of Gittisham, one of East Devon's most picturesque and unspoilt Conservation Villages. It was formerly part of the Combe Estate, which has only been sold twice before, first in 1614 and again in 2004. The village has a number of historical associations, either with the Putt Family (the Tom Putt apple) and Joanna Southcott, who was born in Gittisham in 1750 and was thought to have had supernatural gifts and known throughout England for her prophecies. Situated almost on the doorstep of Gorse Cottage is the pretty Church of St Michael, and on the fringes of the village is The Pig at Combe, a stunning Elizabethan country house hotel, renowned for its beautiful location and fine cuisine. Gittisham itself lies approximately 1.5 miles west of the market town of Honiton which has a range of shops, sports centre/swimming pool and main line rail link to London (Waterloo). Exeter, the County Town, is some 17 miles distant with an excellent shopping centre, sport and leisure facilities, main line rail link to London (Paddington) and international airport. The coast at Sidmouth, which lies on the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline is some 9 miles to the south.
Gardens & Grounds. The property is approached over the small lane which leads to a parking area for two vehicles. This gives access to the detached double length garage with power, light and electric roller door. The gardens lie to three sides of the property and are in the main laid to lawn. These lawns are bordered by profusely stocked shrub beds and interspersed with a variety of apple trees. To the rear of the property is a paved terrace and there is also a summerhouse which has views over the church and surrounding countryside.
Directions.
From Honiton High Street proceed in a westerly direction, straight across the mini-roundabout and after a short distance turn left into Heathpark. Carry on to the 'T' Junction and turn right, then upon reaching the next 'T' Junction turn right again and then left towards Gittisham. Upon entering the village, continue past the green (a small triangle of grass) on your left and turn immediately left and Gorse Cottage will be found after a short distance on you right hand side.
