This chapel was built in 1876 to house the Primitive methodist congregation in Gillingham. Despite its relatively small scale, the design of the chapel is confident and grand, with the front fa?ade flanked by two towers supported by mock buttresses and topped with pyramidal roofs. The central round headed door has a small, decorative round window above it. A date stone with an inscription sits above this but the inscription is not legible. It is a solid and pleasing composition in dressed stone.
The chapel has had a number of different uses as it became a fabric workshop and then served as a storage facility for a charity, acquiring the name "Churchbury House" sometime along the way.
Gillingham is just five miles from Shaftesbury and nestles among the lush pastures of the sweeping Blackmore Vale. It is Dorset's most northerly town and borders Somerset and Wiltshire.
It is only four miles from the A303 main route, is easy to reach and conveniently positioned for exploring Dorset and its
neighbouring counties of Somerset and Wiltshire.
Gillingham railway station originally opened in 1859 and there is a direct train into Waterloo (London) in just under two hours. Although now quite modern, with the only mainline railway station in north Dorset, the town's origins can be traced back to Saxon times and beyond. The town is the site of Dorset's first grammar school established in 1516 and many Tudor buildings can still be seen.
Gillingham Museum provides a fascinating insight into the history of the town and surrounding area from pre-history to more modern times. The famous artist John Constable valued this area so highly he produced five oil paintings and four sketches when he visited in the 1820's. Visitors to the museum can learn more about these paintings and the sites that inspired them.
