History

The Mount is set on the site of an old motte
and bailey castle which dates back to Norman
times. It is partly designated a scheduled
monument and is in a conservation area.
The house stands on the earthworks of the
old motte whilst the fields include the bailey
together with a meadow with a stream that
runs through it.

The Property

The Mount is an impressive Victorian house
which dates from 1869 and is one of Chipping
Norton’s best kept secrets. Set on the edge
of the town, surrounded by trees, the house
is approached down a lane which leads to
the entrance through a pair of wrought iron
gates. Just through the gates is Mount Lodge
which is a charming three bedroom lodge
cottage which overlooks the upper lawn. The
drive continues past the garage and on to The
Mount. Steps lead up to the front door which
opens into the entrance hall with a gracious
staircase to the first floor. Off the hall are the
three principal reception rooms all of which are
well proportioned with high ceilings, typical of
their period. The drawing room and morning
room both have distinctive bay windows which
overlook the garden. Between these two room is
a lobby with a door onto the terrace at the front
of the house. From the hall, a passage leads
to the back of the property with stairs to the
cellar, back staircase and doors to the kitchen/
breakfast room with adjoining family room.
Opposite the kitchen is a study, with a door to
the garden, utility room and cloakroom with a
bath. At the end of the passage a door leads into
a secluded courtyard garden.

The main staircase rises to a galleried landing
off which there are four double bedrooms,
dressing room a family bathroom and a shower
room. A secondary staircase rises to the second
floor with two further double bedrooms.

established specimen trees which create a
wonderful feeling of privacy. The Mount
overlooks the lower lawn with a spring fed
pond. To the front of Mount Lodge is an area
