Our mum lived a fair distance from both of us and as she was getting older, we discussed with her about moving nearer to one of us. She was initially apprehensive, but when Queensgate came up, we arranged with her to view the apartments. There was a choice of upstairs or ground floor to view. We were all drawn to the ground floor flat, Mum especially, as not only an easy walk to the front door and the communal lounge, but it had a lovely private patio with a view to the garden, complete with many colourful plants, birdhouses, decorative arches and nicely cut grass. Mum always loved her garden but wasn’t able to maintain it herself so to know this would be done for her was a bonus! We used to sit on the patio, having coffee with Mum but also, having quickly made friends with her neighbours, she enjoyed tea and cake with them in the gardens, weather permitting. Or meeting in their apartments if raining.

The 24 hour call system gave us peace of mind should she ever need help and the supportive house manager was there during the weekdays if there were any queries. It was hard for her leaving her bungalow, but she very soon settled in to Queensgate and in no time had started a new social life. She said ‘I should’ve moved here a long time ago!’. Seeing her settle without the worry of maintaining her property was a relief as you could see her relax. There was a choice of whether to meet others or keep privately in the flat, there was no pressure. Mum did a mixture of both, choosing what she wanted to do and when. Weekly coffee mornings kept everyone up to date with what was going on and the house manager let you know of any gatherings planned, with a noticeboard as well, where the ‘in house’ homeowners arrange afternoon or evenings events, including music shows, scrabble or Zumba for example. All are optional.

There are 2 supermarkets locally and a lovely park opposite with the local market town of Wokingham a short walk away, or a drive if preferred, with plenty of car parking. We were able to have lunch out, go shopping or just for a nice walk. The allocated parking space that comes with the flat was ideal for family visits so we could visit whenever we wanted to. A guest room can be booked if needed at a nominal fee which we used on occasion and it was very comfy.
